Brand Photography for Walters Woodworking | Central Illinois Brand Photographer
I'll be honest with you: the majority of my clients are women. And I love that. But this session? This one was a really special reminder that branding is for everyone, and that men showing up for their brand matters just as much.
Walters Woodworking is a local company serving the Peoria, Illinois area and surrounding Central Illinois communities. Owner Michael Walters and his team specialize in custom cabinetry, kitchen and bathroom renovations, basement builds, outdoor decks, CNC cabinetry, and countertops. The craftsmanship they put into their work is genuinely impressive, and it deserved photos that matched that level of quality.
And here's the full circle moment I have to share: I actually photographed Michael's wedding years ago. So getting to walk into his business and capture this next chapter of his life… that's exactly the kind of thing that makes this job so meaningful.
A Website Build That Called for a Team Approach
The driving force behind this session was a brand new website. Michael had brought in Francie over at Simply Integrated LLC to handle the full website build for Walter’s Woodworking, and when Francie and I got to collaborate on the vision together, it made everything so much more intentional.
That's something I want to highlight, because it matters: when your web designer and your brand photographer are working from the same plan, the result is a cohesive website that actually functions. Francie knew exactly what types of images she needed for each section. I knew how to create them. Michael got to step back and trust us to handle it.
As a business owner, you're already wearing a hundred hats. Sometimes the best thing you can do is hand a project to professionals who can take the lead. Michael was open to that, and it made for one of the smoothest, most productive shoots I've had.
Inside the Shop: Team Meetings, Headshots, and Men in Their Element
We kicked off the session with group meeting shots at their table, capturing what a morning at Walters Woodworking actually looks like when the team comes together to plan out their projects for the day. It's a behind-the-scenes peek that immediately communicates: this is a real, organized, professional operation.
From there, we moved into individual employee headshots, and I wanted to give them two distinct options. One set was shot in their main lobby with the Walters Woodworking logo in the background, clean and professional. The other set was taken right in the woodworking shop, a little grittier, a little more real, showing the guys in the environment where they actually do their work. Both have their place on the website, and having the variety means they're covered.
Then we did team photos in the shop together before we really got into it.
Here's the thing about photographing men on a job site: you give them a task, get out of the way, and let them work. That's exactly what happened. Once the guys got comfortable, they started pitching their own shot ideas, thinking through what would look cool, what would show off what they do. That kind of organic energy is my favorite to shoot, and honestly? Getting men to not just cooperate but actually enjoy a photo shoot is always a win.
Showcasing the Craft
This is where the session really came alive. We made sure every major service Walters Woodworking offers had a visual to match.
Cabinet building is a core part of their business, and we spent real time capturing the process from start to finish. The CNC machine was a highlight I didn't expect to love as much as I did. We documented the full behind-the-scenes journey from designing on a computer all the way to the finished product coming off the machine. That kind of content is gold for a website because it shows potential clients the level of precision and technology behind the work.
We also captured painting, samples, and material selections, pulling different countertop and cabinet samples from the lobby and arranging them so website visitors could get a real sense of what's available.
And then there were the flat lays. I grabbed a variety of tools and blueprints from the shop and had so much fun building out some creative arrangements. I also shot several of them in black and white, which gives the website design options for text overlay without the photo competing with the copy. That kind of forward-thinking detail is exactly what happens when you plan a brand session with intention.
One of my personal favorite moments from the entire shoot: the sawdust shot. We captured one of the guys mid-cut, sawdust flying through the air, completely frozen in action. It is so cool and it's the kind of image that stops someone mid-scroll.
We also grabbed a few exterior shots of the front of the building for their Google Business Profile, which is a step so many businesses forget and one that has a real impact on local search visibility in the Peoria area.
The Real Project Walk-Through
This part of the session was something I hadn't done quite like this before, and it made such a difference.
We went to an actual home that Walters Woodworking had recently completed work in. Not a staged set. A real client's house, showcasing real finished projects. Here's what we documented:
The kitchen remodel was stunning. We captured every detail: the custom cabinetry, countertops, backsplash, the hardware, all of it. Close-up detail shots and wide shots of the full space, because both tell part of the story.
Built-in shelving and custom ceiling beams in the living room. The kind of built-ins that make a room feel completely transformed.
A full bathroom renovation that was, honestly, absolutely beautiful.
This is something I feel strongly about: if you do stunning work, you need stunning photos of it. iPhone shots posted to your website do not do justice to the level of craftsmanship Walters Woodworking puts into a project. A professional camera captures the texture of the countertops, the depth of the cabinetry, the detail in the tile work. That's the difference between a potential client going nice and going I need to call them right now.
Branding Is for Men Too
I keep coming back to this because it's something I genuinely believe and don't think gets said enough.
So much of the conversation around brand photography centers on women-owned businesses, product brands, and service providers in traditionally female-dominated industries. But if you own a business, you need a brand. Full stop. Whether you're building kitchens or building websites, your potential clients are looking you up online before they ever pick up the phone. What they find when they get there matters.
Michael didn't have it all figured out going into this session, and that's perfectly fine. That's not what you need. You don't need a perfectly articulated vision or years of marketing experience. You need to show up, trust the process, and let the people around you who do this every day take the lead.
That's exactly what he did. And the result is a website full of images that represent Walters Woodworking exactly as they are: skilled, professional, and genuinely great at what they do.
