Brand Photography for Wild Flour Sourdough Bakehouse| Central Illinois Brand Photographer
If you've ever scrolled past a bakery's Instagram and instantly felt like you needed to place an order, you already understand the power of intentional brand photography. That's exactly the magic we created when Elizabeth of Wild Flour Sourdough Bakehouse came to me for her very first brand photos and this session is one I'll be talking about for a long time.
Meet Wild Flour Sourdough Bakehouse
Elizabeth runs Wild Flour Sourdough Bakehouse, a Central Illinois sourdough bakery with a warm, organic brand aesthetic and seriously beautiful products. She came to me ready to level up her online presence. She needed professional images for her website, a full library of social media content, and photos that could represent her brand across every marketing touchpoint. She didn't have brand photos yet, and she was ready to invest in doing it right.
I'll be honest: I don't work with food often. But the moment we started planning this session, my creativity was absolutely flowing. This shoot reminded me of exactly why I love what I do.
A Two-Location Session: Studio + Backyard Picnic
Elizabeth booked my two-location brand photography package, which gave us the variety and volume of content she needed to truly show up for her business.
Location 1: The Studio on Sampson
We kicked off the session at The Studio on Sampson here in Central Illinois. This portion of the shoot was all about her products — clean, polished images perfect for her website, online shop, and any printed marketing materials. Think business cards, pricing guides, flyers, and signage.
Product photography requires intention. We weren't just pointing a camera at sourdough loaves, we were creating images that would make someone stop mid-scroll and immediately want to place an order.
Location 2: The Backyard Picnic
This is where things got really special. For the second half of the session, we moved to Elizabeth's backyard, and I had a vision: a picnic scene that felt light, organic, and completely aligned with her brand.
We set up a green gingham blanket on the grass, arranged wicker baskets filled with her baked goods, and tucked in sprigs of baby's breath throughout. A white picket fence in the background pulled everything together… Airy, fresh, and perfectly on-brand.
And then the surprise guests showed up. Her neighbors have alpacas. Who just casually wandered into the background of our photos. Along with a few farm cats. I can honestly say those photobombs were the best kind of unexpected, and they gave the photos an undeniable charm and character that you simply cannot plan for.
Why Outfit Planning Is a Non-Negotiable Part of Brand Photography
This is something I talk about with every client: your outfit choices are a strategic decision, not just a style preference.
For Elizabeth, we planned two distinct looks:
Studio look: A green apron over a white top, grounded and professional (the classic baker aesthetic, but elevated). The second outfit she wore olive colored pants with a light green sweater.
Picnic look: A white top, and denim jeans. Casual, natural, lifestyle-forward.
Here's the strategy behind the picnic outfit specifically: because we had a white picket fence behind her and her products were the real stars of those shots, putting Elizabeth in white meant her gorgeous baked goods (all those beautiful textures and warm tones) stood out front and center. Her outfit served her products, not the other way around.
That's the kind of intentional thinking that separates a brand photography session from a regular portrait session.
The Bonus: Her Bar Cart
One more thing we made sure to capture… Elizabeth has a bar cart she brings to on-site events, where she sells her baked goods directly to guests. This is a perfect offering for Central Illinois weddings and special events looking for specialty artisan items.
We photographed the cart styled with her products so she has marketing assets ready to go whenever she's pitching herself for events. That kind of forward-thinking content planning is exactly what a brand session should do.
What Brand Photography Actually Does for Your Business
After the session, Elizabeth sent me a message that made my whole week: posting on Instagram had become so much easier.
That's the goal. Here's the thing about investing in brand photos… They don't just live on your website. They show up everywhere:
Your website (homepage, about page, services)
Instagram and Facebook posts and stories
Your email signature
Canva templates: pricing guides, PDFs, lead magnets
Printed materials: business cards, flyers, signage
Press features or collaborations
When all of those touchpoints look cohesive, your brand feels established and trustworthy. You stop scrambling to find something to post and start showing up with confidence.
What Goes Into Planning a Brand Session Like This
I don't walk into any session blindly. Before we ever step in front of a camera, I get to know your brand on a deep level:
What do you offer, and who do you serve?
How do you plan to use these photos?
What are your brand colors, style, and personality?
What are your upcoming marketing needs?
From there, we build a strategy and a shot list together. Every decision (locations, props, outfits, poses) is made with your business goals in mind. The result is a cohesive gallery that works hard for you across every platform.
My Advice: Go All In
If you're going to invest the time and energy into planning a brand session, get the multiple locations and the multiple outfit changes. A well-planned session can give you content that lasts a solid year or longer. That's not an indulgence, that's smart business.
Elizabeth trusted the process, showed up prepared, and walked away with a full library of images that reflect exactly who she is and what Wild Flour Sourdough Bakehouse stands for.
